Sol first heads in my direction in his animal form, a golden mountain lion. He is around 2.5 meters long from head to tail, strong and sturdy, and incredibly lithe.
His tail sways smoothly from side to side as he moves, and his paws sink deeply into the earth. His hazel eyes are warm and speak of the many things he has seen, and the knowledge and experience he holds.
He takes one step, and in the next, he has shifted from his animal form and into his human form so quickly and unexpectedly that it takes me a second to really take in the change. One second he is a mountain lion and the next he is a tall man with golden skin, proud cheekbones, and light brown hair. He smiles warmly at me in greeting, giving me time to adjust to the change before bowing his head in acknowledgment and proceeding with our interview.
“So, Sol, what would your ideal companion be like?” I ask at last, once we are both sitting down and basking in the beautiful sunlight that streams down overhead.
Sol thinks carefully for a moment before his deep, smooth voice quietly echoes in the silence. His words are well thought-out, and they carry weight within them- they are enrapturing.
“The person I am searching for… they are someone with a deep connection to the sun. And to healing.”
“They’d be soft, but not weak. They’d be kind,” he tells me. “And lost.”
He frowns for a moment. “Do not misunderstand me, of course. I do not wish loss upon everyone, but I feel I could best help someone who has strayed from their path and is seeking to reconnect with their roots.”
“And what is something you’d like your future companion to know right now?”
“I would like them to know that they are not alone. There is a sense of disconnection in their heart- but we are all children of the sun and its light does not leave us no matter how dark and dire the situation might seem.”
“You’re all children of the sun?”
Sol nods and looks upwards, allowing the golden light to wash over him and bathe him in its clear, cleansing warmth. “My people believe all life is descended from the sun. The legend speaks of great loss. The sun and the moon were once siblings, both radiant. But the moon one day grew sick, and soon it died.”
“The sun wept for the loss of its kin. The moon was submerged under this glowing golden river and brought back- changed by its death. And everything that had been touched by the sun’s misery grew hot and enlivened.”
“That’s a beautiful story.”
“Aside from your culture, what else will you teach your future companion?”
“I will teach them of divination, of healing, of ancestor work. Of love and forgiveness of the self. And they will teach me too, for we will be intertwined.”
“Does that mean you believe in destiny, Sol?”
He laughs, amused by the doubt in my voice. “Of course I do. We are all interconnected. The threads of our fates are interwoven. This is why I am not afraid. I know I am where I am meant to be, and that I will meet the one who I am meant to meet in due time.”
