Skull appears as if from nowhere- one moment he is not there, and the next, his bright crimson eyes are mesmerizingly bright in the darkness amidst the shadows.
He walks slowly towards me, taking his time when approaching, ears relaxed, dark, shaggy fur bellowing in the soft breeze.
His body is huge- unnaturally so, and his features are wolfish. When he finally reaches me, he shifts in the blink of an eye, so smoothly that it seems almost as if the change is instantaneous.
He sniffs the air and snarls. “Ah, my brother was here.”
“You’re both in vetting.”
He shrugs, releasing the tension from his slender but muscled shoulders, and looks at me with sharp eyes. “So vet me then.”
“Alright, Skull, how would you describe yourself?” I ask.
He sneers, full lips curling back and revealing sharp canines. “A son of a bitch!” he says, and then barks out a peal of cold laughter, throwing his head back in amusement at his own joke.
“I am resilient,” he says, suddenly turning serious. “Life has been cruel to me, but I remain. My brother, for all his talk of the hunt, has never been the prey. He only knows himself as predator and in that, he is weak. I have been both. I know I am both. That is my strength.”
“What do you mean? You are both prey and predator?”
Skull is quiet for a moment as he tries to form delicate words around the rough edges of his natural speech. “There are those,” he finally settles upon, “far stronger than I am. This is not my admission of weakness- for I am strong, far stronger than many- but there are those who could crush me like you and I would crush an ant. What I mean is that… I am not the ant. Nor am I the one who crushes me. I am in between. I can be destroyed by many, but I hold power over many, too.”
“That’s weirdly philosophical of you,” I note, since Skull is not one with a penchant for this sort of tirades.
“I’m not just beauty,” he snarks, “there is brains in here too.”
Rolling my eyes, I proceed with the rest of the interview. “So- tell me, what made you step forward in order to be a companion?”
“I am lonely,” Skull deadpans, in his usually forthcoming and incredibly honest way.
“That’s fair. And what are you looking for in a companion?”
“Some good banter and some great sex.”
He looks completely unapologetic. “Isn’t that what all good relationships amount to?”
“What about communication? Respect? Compatibility?”
Skull rolls his crimson eyes at me, obviously annoyed. “If I have to mention those as necessities, then that’d make you a pretty shit matchmaker.”
I sigh. “Fair enough. Anyways. What would you bring to the companionship?”
“I am an invaluable asset- do I need to list off all of my good qualities? I can teach my future companion of necromancy and death work, of cursing, of sex magic- you name it, I’ve probably done it.”
“How humble of you.”
Laughing, Skull stands up and begins to walk away. “Humility,” he says, “is for the inept.”
With those parting words, he leaves.
