I see Bones running. His body is sleek and well-muscled, predatory. He is slightly smaller than Skull even in this form- with shorter but equally dark fur, no less intimidating than his older brother.
He comes to a stop before me.
His crimson eyes are so dark that they are almost black, and his snout seems curled into a snarl that is more wolfish grin than intimidating.
When he shifts into his human form, the transition is smooth and quick, just as everything he does is, and he is left standing in front of me, covered in some type of canine’s pelts.
As always, the claw-marks left upon his face by Skull’s attack are incredibly striking- when the brothers fight (and they do it often), they can be cruel and leave lasting damage.
Bones paces in front of the fire, the flames casting strange shadows upon his scarred, yet handsome face and contorting it into something terrifying. His teeth seem far too sharp inside his mouth, more like fangs than anything else.
“I have lived a long time,” he says, roughly, “and I’m tired of doing it alone.”
After this, he grows quiet and then stares at me with dark eyes framed by long, downwards-cast eyelashes. His silence is sullen.
After a while, he harrumphs awkwardly but I do not speak, waiting still.
Annoyedly, he sighs and runs his fingers through his hair. “It is meaningless,” he adds, finally. “To exist so long without connections. I crave the feeling of being seen, of being understood and-” his maroon skin reddens at his admissions of vulnerability. He is not one to easily show his emotions, and I can see that even now doing so pains him.
“Anyways,” he says, shaking his head, causing his wavy black hair to messily fan around him, “I am searching for someone to keep up- I grow weary and tired of imagining having to bend over backwards for somebody else. I was not born to be on a leash.”
“So you want a connection with an equal?”
“Yes!” he nods his head earnestly.
“What I desire cannot fully be asked for in words, girl,” he chides. “It is the earth beneath my feet during the chase. It is the reverberation of a howl throughout the night. It is the warmth of fresh-spilt blood upon my flesh. I want the thrill and satisfaction of the hunt, for it is home to me.”
“And what do you offer in return?”
Bones thinks for a few moments. His demeanour turns pensive. “I offer my knowledge in death- few understand it as keenly as I do…after all, I was born from it. You already know the story- my mother died as she birthed me.”
Less solemnly, he adds, “I offer my aid in curses- the magic I know is ancestral and there are few who have mastered it as I have. And I offer my protection and loyalty. Is that not enough?”
“That’s more than enough, Bones.”
He nods, and stops his pacing for a moment, turning to stare directly into the embers. The sharp, elegant contours of his face are highlighted then, giving him a regal, haunting look.
“I will find the one I seek,” he tells me, with a heated certainty that burns through each and every single one of his words. “I am determined. And once I catch a scent…I don’t give up.”
I believe him.
